Why My Family Left New England

This past March, my husband and I made the surprisingly easy decision to leave New England forever.

We both grew up in New England, and we had been trying to figure out where to go next for a few years. We knew it wasn’t the place for us.

We had our first daughter in the Fall of 2021. We had just ended our lease and temporarily moved in with my parents while we tried to save to buy a house.

We made a lot of progress, but the housing market also made a lot of progress… In the form of prices going up.

Neither of us were willing to pay 500k for an outdated 2 or 3 bedroom with an untold number of issues. Nor could we have if we wanted to.

We had been thinking about a few different places to live over the past few years. We didn’t feel tied to New England. Staying close to family wasn’t important to either of us. In fact, getting some distance was a priority.

In the end, we set our sights on the Midwest. Neither of us had even been there but after researching the cost of living we decided it would be a good place to move.

I’m a stay at home mom, and at the time I was pregnant with our second daughter. We needed to go somewhere where one income would go farther.

So we moved! And to be frank, other than the occasionally crazy weather, we love it here. And I don’t miss New England at all.

While the Northeast is beautiful, it wasn’t what we needed. I’m looking forward to our future here in the Midwest.
